A common myth is that if you employ too much discipline while raising your child, you run the risk of breaking their spirit and creating a weak adult or as I once heard "You know, fire can turn iron into steel, but it can also turn ice into water".
My response is typically along the lines of "You sound like you are either an absentee/dysfunctional parental unit, who doesn't participate in the managment of pediatric units or you were an obnoxious shit as a pediatric unit who received little guidence from their own parental units and as a result developed in to an absentee parental unit who chooses not to take responsiblity for the actions and future of their own pediatric units. So which were you?"
