As my colleague, Shoelover, recently posted about how to keep your kids in bed at night, I thought I would take over the reins and dispense some professional advice as to how to keep your kids from running out of their room at night when they should be sleeping.
While sewing a pair of pajamas to the bed sheet is an ingenious idea, it is very labor intensive, I mean really, who the hell has time to sew in this day and age. A quicker way would to simply use some crazy glue in lieu of sewing as it is much faster.
Another method would be to make sure that the door knob on the inside of the child's door, you know the one that they can reach by the time they are 3 (or earlier if someone has the bright ideal to put the door knobs 32 inches above the floor rather than 39 to 40 inches), is somehow removed from the situation. This can be done a number of ways, including:
- Take the door off of its hinges and turn it upside down. This will require some work as the hinges will have to be moved. The result is, assuming your door is about 7 feet (84 inches) in height, that you will have moved the door knob a few inches higher as it will now be 39 inches from the top of the door or about 45 inches from the floor. However, if your home builder had the foresight to place your doorknobs at 32 inches from the floor, turning your door upside down will now put the knob 52 inches from the floor or about 4.33 feet from the floor. This puts the door knob out of reach of the average boy until they are a good 7 years of age and the average girl a little bit earlier. The main variable here would be how far above their head the child could reach. This method should guarantee at least a few years of restful nights sleep;
- Removing the door knob from the inside of the door all together. While this effectively "locks" the child in the room, it removes the need for unsightly latches on the outside of the door and fabricating stories to explain to people who visit your house as to why you have locks on the outside of your children's room (The "Oh, when we have the windows open in the summer, these door seem to blow open and closed all the time" story doesn't really work); and,
-Get a latch lock on the inside of your door (along with a sound proof door) or better yet, turn your bed room into a "Panic Room". Probably the easiest solution to the problem and has the added benefit of being able to lock your spouse out of the bed room when you feel like being alone.
