Thanks to all for the compliments on shoelover's shoes and toesies. If feet could blush! I'm glad to know that there are others out there who pay attention to the much neglected part of a girlie girl's anatomy. Which brings me to my concern of the day: keeping your feet and toesies pristine looking in the summer time. Nothing irks shoelover more than crossing the road and getting her perfect heels caught in the cracks of the sidewalk. Actually, one thing irks me more: gangly men who accidentally step on your feet (do they not realize how expensive my shoes are?)

If you're concerned about some brute stepping on your toe and chipping your polish in your open-toed shoes (which is really all you should be wearing in the summer) here is what shoelover recommends:

• Choose a light colored polish. Nothing will send you screaming to your pedicurist like chipped red. Shoelover thinks red is too harsh for the summer anyway. The ideal polish for any woman's toesies is French. My signature look is a French with a slightly pink tint for a base (for extra girliness.)
• Go the gel route, girlie. High end gel nails -- not the cheapo kind that gets smeared on like jam -- can keep your nails strong and beautiful. Shoelover suggest Bio Sculpture gels. They're not cheap, but they're worth it.
• Go nude. Clear toenails can be very sexy -- not that I'd know, it has been years since I've gone au natural.  This is also an option If your toesies aren't ready for the big time yet and your pedicurist thinks you should wait awhile before graduating to French, Use a clear hardener to get your toes into shape.

Remember, even if you're slipping into the most luscious pair of Blahniks, it doesn't matter if your toesies aren't pretty. Fab shoes won't turn your feet into gems just like black clothes don't really make you look skinny . Point to ponder.

The privaleged poor

As I flipped through yesterday's Globe and Mail, I came across a column by Leah McLaren on toenails. After my recent proselyting on proper foot care I was curious to read what she had to say about the topic. Apparently, Leah bruised her toe running for the phone. As much as I empathize with her plight -- the same thing happened to me a few years back and I was forced to get my toe nail removed -- her column, as usual, was irritating. Her feet may very well be her finest quality, or so McLaren muses in her column. But really, is a black toe nail really fodder for an entire column in a national newspaper? Yes, Leah, naked nails may be fashionable but really, boo hoo. Put on some tasteful closed-toed slippers and move on. A true fashionista knows that in order to look good, you must know how to work with your flaws. Please, do not bore us with your icky toe nails stories anymore.

And now for a little introspection: why are women drawn to shoes? Why must we glance through the window of every shoe store we pass, even a low end one, and wonder "what if." "What if I bought that pair of Indian embroidered flats? Would I wear them?" Is this part of our nature? Nurture? It's like dragging a dog away from sniffing another dog's behind. Pull us away too quickly, before we have had our 'what if' moment and we could nip.

This is what shoelover believes: Women like to treat their feet like precious gifts that need to be lovingly wrapped up in a beautiful ornament. So much attention and detail is placed in choosing the right shoe, the right hose, etc. And let us not forget the toes! Ladies, there is no point in donning a fragile piece of shoe art, like a pink pair of Ferragamos I bought recently, if you don't have the toes to go with them. Proper toe maintenance is a necessity. A couple of years ago at a resort in the Dominican Republic, I started chatting with another couple from Toronto and the wife revealed that she only had a pedicure "once or twice a year." We were in a hot climate -- she wore sandals everyday. Flabbergasted, I responded that, for the most part, I had my toes done once a month -- even in the winter!
