Shoes for the less than dainty footed lady

There are at least two occasions in every woman's life when she wants to feel like a princess: her senior prom and her wedding day.

If you wear a size 10 shoe or larger, the lack of shoe choices can leave you feeling more like an ugly stepsister than Cinderella, though. And 27-year-old entrepreneur Kathryn Kerrigan has felt your pain. Literally.

"I wear a size 11, but I never realized I even had a problem until I had to dress up for prom," she recalls. "I dragged my dad to every mall in the Chicago area and the only thing we could find was a $300 pair of Stuart Weitzman shoes that were out of my price range and more suited for a woman in her 50s than for a prom."

Yet according to Kerrigan, a recent survey showed that 30 percent of women in the United States wear a shoe size of 9 or larger.

"You're lucky if you can find the one size 11 that a store does carry," Kerrigan says. "And it's usually in some random color that no one has in the closet."

It's something she was able to commiserate over with her fellow teammates while playing basketball at Lake Forest College. Three years ago, she had a breakdown and an epiphany while working on her MBA at Loyola: Just because the shoe fits, doesn't mean you should wear it.

"I had to go to a wedding and I couldn't find anything that matched my dress," she says.

Kerrigan finally had had enough and took matters into her own hands. If no one in the shoe industry was going to make a dress shoe that would fit her, she'd do it herself.

With that, the Libertyville resident started her own shoe business, Kathryn Kerrigan Inc., and began designing women's premium evening shoes in larger sizes.

Her sole purpose is to offer more elegant and fashionable choices to women like herself. Her line includes a selection of sandals, flats, pumps and slingbacks. The majority are in sizes 10-14, although she offers some as small as 6. They range in price from $44 for a matte white leather dress pump to $244 for a chocolate-colored suede short boot (continued...)

Latte Boots

One of the benefits of living in the Great White North is winter.  OK, well the truth is that there is really only one benefit of winter, the need to own a winter wardrobe, and the accompanying winter shoe and boot collection.

The need for boots becomes especially apparent on a morning like this morning when at 7 am, Shoelover feels compelled to go get a latte.  Not just any latte, but a Jet Fuel latte.  Jet Fuel Coffee is antithesis of Starbucks.  It's cheap (like 3 Canuck-bux for a super giant latte), non-mechanical (no automated "espresso" machines here thank you), non-corporate and each cup of coffee is served with its own special brand of surly-java-love.  Get there early enough and they may have some fresh backed danish and muffins (once they are gone, that is it for the day).  Get there late enough on certain days and you may be lucky to hear about one clerk's random sexual escapades.

Shoelover would make Jet Fuel a part of Shoelover's every day routine except that they only open at 7 am and Shoelover is already at the office by then.

So back to the point of this post.  What do you wear to the Jet Fuel at 7am on a freezing Sunday morning to get a cup of Java enlightenment?  Today Shoelover went with the Koalla from Steve "Jailbird" Madden (in black thank you.  I think Madden had a pair of these in jail house orange, but will have to confirm this).  At about the 155 dollar level, it is well priced and at the mid calf level, it helps keep Shoelover warm when wearing mid thigh skirts to show off the recently acquired suntan (every little bit of coverage counts in sub zero weather you know).

Flip Flop Fillosophy (Poolside Johnny)

No, we aren't talking about John Kerry's 2004 Presidential campaign run, we're trying to figure out what to wear on our feet while working from the Dominican Republic (As you may or may not know, Shoelover is looking to open a southern office)

Shoelover used to be of the mindset that rather than buying quantity, buy quality, it is cheaper in the long run.  Having said that, Shoelover's expensive beach attire has been, well, less than quantity of quality expected given the quantity of money spent on items such as bikini's and beach sandals. (As an aside, flip flops are not probably not appropriate attire to wear when meeting the President of the United States, Governor of California maybe, Governor of Hawaii, probably and if you are meeting Governor Felix P. P. Camacho of Guam, you are probably over dressing).

This year Shoelover found Flojo.  They are sweet and easy, just like Shoelover's second year university roommate (good if you are a beach shoe, bad if you are a 20 year old blond farm girl who has the body that Pam Anderson, and every guy, wants). Shoelover picked up 3 pairs of the Flojo Bella model at around $20 each.  Even if these things don't make it back from the southern office, Shoelover will be better off than last year after the Ixtapa sandal fiasco.
